Animal Farm Chapter Xi Essay Example For Students

Animal Farm Chapter Xi Essay CHAPTER XIA YEAR PASSED. The seasons came went, the short animal lives fled by. A time when no one remembered the old days before the rebellion, except Clover, Benjamin, Moses the raven and a number of pigs. One day in early summer, the animals woke to the sound of a loud explosion from the Truman Farm. Which, in the past Napoleon, had forbid the animals to have any contact with. The animals ran out to see what had happened, there was a big black cloud looming above the farmhouse, it was on fire, the animals were all wondering what had happened. Napoleon appeared, raising his trotter for silence, he said we have been woken an hour early, with all this commotion we will have no chance of more rest, so we will start working now. I will get dressed then I will go to the Truman Farm to determine what has happened. The animals were scared, Napoleon and Squealer had always cautioned them about the Truman Farm, and they did not know why they were not to go there, they just knew they should nt, but the reason couldnt be too serious because the farm had only been built about a year ago. Clover said What is happening Benjamin, what is that smoke? And what is Napoleon going to do? No one has ever ventured to the Truman Farm before. Benjamin replied, that is a Great Fire Clover, the animals will not be safe there. Fortunately, we have not had the anguish of a Great Fire in our life times. Squealer once told us Great Fires travel to farms where the animals do not do enough work, they kill everything that gets in their way, and they wreck the crops and barns as well. There was a Great Fire right here at the Manor Farm about two years before I was born. And as for Napoleon, he is the leader he does what he wants, when he wants. Squealer ordered the animals to work straight away. Napoleon returned wearing a suit, a top hat and carrying a cane. He was so fat he could scarcely walk. He walked out of the Manor Farm gate, slowly making his way to the Truman Farm. It was only two hundred metres down the road, but it took Napoleon ten minutes to get there, after all pigs arent quite familiarized to bipedal walking. On arrival, Napoleon inspected the blazing buildings from the gate; he decided it was too risky to enter through the front gate, so he trekked to the side gate. As he was entering something caught his eye. It was the farmer rounding up the animals, shooting his gun at the ground next to them. He finally got most of the animals into a small fenced in area, then he ran to the hose and tried to control the fire. He was not doing much good though. Napoleon approached the farmer, you should wet the ground and crops around the barn, and the fire will then burn out. The farmer looked around he was stunned, youre?youre a pig, yes, Napoleon replied. But your wear ing clothes, and your walking, and, and, and talking, Napoleon reminded the farmer about the fire; quick wet the ground before the fire spreads. The farmer did as Napoleon said. When the fire finally burnt out the farmer proceeded towards Napoleon. Where are you from?, Napoleon explained that he was from down the road, at the Manor Farm and also about what had happened with Mr. Jones. I am now the owner of the farm, the other animals abide by my rules and work the crops. I teach the younger pigs and do all the farms paper work. The farmer was astonished, he had never seen a pig walk, let alone speak with such intelligence. Napoleon asked if he could see the animals, the farmer took him towards the fenced in area, where the scared animals were waiting. Napoleon talked to the animals, and to the farmers disbelief his animals talked back. Napoleon noticed one pig in particular who was extremely intellectual. The farmer invited Napoleon inside for coffee; they talked for hours about the revolution. He asked many questions, so he could establish exactly what happened. Napoleon finally arrived back at the Manor Farm, all the animals rushed to the gate to greet him . They were all asking what happened, and what it was like at the Truman Farm. All Napoleon said was all restrictions on having no contact with the Truman Farm have been lifted. As he walked towards the farmhouse, Squealer yelled, Ok, back to work. Emily Grierson Motive To Kill Homer Barron EssayThe next morning the animals rose as usual, Napoleon said everyone to work at once. They were all uneasy, you could smell fear in the air, though Napoleon did not notice anything unusual. When the working day was over, the animals had five minutes until dinner, and they assembled in their positions. Napoleon and Squealer strolled towards the barn at 6:29 right on time as usual. The moment came, the signal went, first the pigeons flew above Napoleon and Squealer and dropped their dung, they swooped to and fro, while this was happening the ducks and geese ran out and pecked fiercely at them, the other pigs charged at them, then all the sheep, goats and cows head butted them. To finish things off, the horses came out kicking, powerful kicks with their hind legs. Squealer got a fatal kick to the head. Napoleon was using his  last ounce of strength to break free, when Benjamin grabbed Joness shotgun and fired it. The first bullet hit Napoleon in the side, he fell to the floor, Motionless, the animals gathered round and scorned at Napoleon. They did not know whether to let him die in pain or put him out of his misery, one of the sheep bleated four legs good, two legs bad. BANG, the bullet hit Napoleon right between the eyes. The Animals gathered in the barn, Benjamin, said we are now Free, the animals cheered, even the pigs. We will now vote for our committee of representatives. There shall be one representative for each species of animal. The votes had been counted and the representatives chosen, the Board of Representatives was having its first official meeting. Everyone was so happy with how the, Battle of the Cowshed, Again had turned out they had a huge party. At the party Benjamin made a speech, I remember every detail of my long life, I thought things never had been, nor ever could be much better. Hunger, hardship, and disappointment. That I thought, was the unalterable law of life, as it turns out my whole life.

Yield direction is critical to maximising a cordial reception s profitableness. The construct are applied to every gross section and across section. The output director s occupation is to maximise the gross per available room by selling suites to the right clients, at the right monetary value, at the right clip. Economic Issues Dependence upon the Nation s Economy When the state s economic system is good, concern travel by and large increases. Hospitality tenancy rates and single-foot rates increase, which consequences in higher net income degrees. The contrary is besides true: concern travel slows when the economic system slow. Then tenancy and rack rates decrease. Discounts to increase tenancy are offered, which yield lower grosss and net income lessenings. Globalization Globalization impacts the housing industry dramatically because it influences the extent of which people travel both within the state and around the universe. Therefore, it is non merely the economic system of the state, but besides the economic systems of single states, that play an progressively larger function in the fiscal success of lodging belongingss. To vie, they must pay closer attending to the tendencies of globalisation. The industry must reflect the demands of the planetary small town in many facets of its operations, including nutrient, services, comfortss, staffing policies and preparation. 7.3.3 Tendencies in Hospitality Industry: Rapid Growth in Vacation Ownership: Vacation ownership is the fastest turning section of the housing industry and is likely to go on turning as the babe boomers enter their 1950ss and 1960ss in the U.S.A.. The World Tourism Organization has called timeshares one of the fastest turning sectors of the travel and touristry industry. Cordial reception companies are adding trade name power to the construct with corporations like Marriott Vacation Club International, the Walt Disney Company, Hilton Hotels, Hyatt Hotels, Promus Embassy Suites, Inter-Continental and of all time Four Seasons take parting in an industry that has grown quickly in recent old ages. Integration A ; Globalization: Vertical integrating is a tendency that began a few old ages ago. Lodging companies realized that invitees adjustment demands were non merely at one degree ; instead, they seemed to change by monetary value and facilities/amenities. About all major lodging companies now have belongingss in each section of the market. The hereafter of the housing industry involves globalisation. Companies can non turn unless they venture beyond the United States. American cordial reception ironss and their direction techniques were in demand by many developing states who wanted premium-name hotel. An extended study of the status of the cordial reception would hold shown that significant sums of money would be necessary to keep the cordial reception s status. The cordial reception industry is therefore at the really nucleus of the globalisation of international concern. Cordial reception companies hence need to see the deductions of the planetary context in which they o perate and must be prepared to turn to the inquiries that arise from this altering environment. Globalization will finally touch virtually all facets of the cordial reception industry. Increasingly, clients, direction procedures, employees, merchandises, and beginnings of capital will be competed for and will travel across national boundaries. Competition in the hereafter will come from planetary entities with the advantages that globalization brings. New Management: The complex forces of capacity control, safety and security, capital motion, and engineering issues will necessitate a future direction cell that is able to accommodate to rapid-paced alteration across all the traditional maps of direction. The turning complexness of the customer/employee interaction, driven by engineering and the information age, will determine human resources demands in the hereafter. The client, armed with more information, will anticipate frontline and other cordial reception staff to be at least as knowing about the house s offerings as they are themselves. This will be hard in an industry characterized by low-skilled, low-paid forces and a high grade of cultural and behavioural diverseness among its employees. Visioning the hereafter: major forces driving alteration in the cordial reception industry considers seven countries decisive to the hereafter development of the industry. Each is examined to find the range and complexness of the issue an d the timing of its impact. That is assets and capital, wellness and safety, new direction, selling, distribution and capacity direction, engineering, sustainable development, societal issues Expanded function of Travel Intermediaries A ; Portals: The entry of Google has added a new dimension to hotel room distribution, since users can book straight from the hunt consequences page, alternatively of snaping through to another site. Traveling frontward, hotels may happen themselves being distributed much like bundle goods. Many invitees will travel to a travel purveyor for hotel suites, merely as they go to a nutrient market for food markets. Further, there have been installations extended to many states including India for developing free web sites by Google enabling little or even un organized hotels accessible on web. Mobile apps and RFID: Social media, which have grown exponentially in the past few old ages, will go on to be a force, but the large electronic development for hotel distribution and operations is nomadic devices, peculiarly those with radio frequence designation ( RFID ) french friess. Because of the singular dip in the cost of RFID, the survey by Cornell Research Centre anticipate that this will interrupt out as its ain tendency shortly plenty, and the combination of RFID and nomadic apps will let invitees to utilize their smart phones to book a room, cheque in, open their guestroom door, and settle their pagination all without direct contact with staff. Even without RFID, invitees usage of nomadic devices will make chances for invention by hotelkeepers, including new services and runing efficiencies. Following coevals globalisation: Not long ago, globalisation meant that hotel trade names from developed states expanded into developing states, whether through maestro franchises or by geting local houses. Globalization is now fluxing in the rearward way, as trade names from developing states are spread outing to developed states, every bit good as to other developing states. To call merely a few trade names, Taj Hotels from India has now operations in UK, US holding belongingss in Boston, New York, and San Francisco, every bit good as hotels in London and Sydney, Jumeirah from UAE now manages the Essex House in New York, every bit good as belongingss in London and Frankfurt ; Thus, globalisation will intend that hotel trade names criss-cross the Earth. 7.4 Eco Responsible Approaches in Hospitality Business In the touristry industry, hotels account for a important sum of the overall pollution generated by this sector. The potency of implementing more sustainable patterns in the hotel sector requires the handiness of dependable tools for appraisal and benchmarking of hotel environmental public presentation. A figure of such tools have been developed by international environmental organisations, subdivision associations and even hotel corporations. The assorted strategies differ with respect to geographical/climatic countries covered, types of hotel installations included, item of environmental information required, benchmarking methods, user-friendliness and execution cost. Green Hotels: In position of the deficit of resources on Earth, lifting consciousness of environmental protection, and ecological preservation, eco-friendly hotels shall be the reply for the above issues, so that natural resources can be recycled, re-used, and energy can be conserved. These are the future ends of the hotel adjustment industry. The term green hotel ( eco-friendly hotel ) was foremost introduced following the outgrowth of the above constructs. Eco-friendly Hotel Association ( 2000 ) was set up to make the green hotel demands that promote the economical usage of H2O and energy, and decrease of solid waste, so as to safeguard the Earth resources. Green Mountain State ( 2010 ) has focused on the creative activity of an eco-friendly environment, perchance leting for part from all staffs and invitees likewise. It carefully scrutinizes each country of the hotel operation to happen ways to cut down the impacts on the environment. It besides looks for ways to educate the popul ace, and to remind everyone that every spot counts no affair how bantam the part may be. At the same clip, it maintains its committedness to supply the sort of quality service that is expected by hotel invitees. The basic construct of a green hotel is a topographic point of adjustment that can supply eco-friendly services, but its chief end shall be focused on ways to keep its sustainable operation. Under the premiss of minimising the environmental impact, a green hotel shall be managed in such a manner to supply frequenters with a comfy, healthy, natural adjustment while its service quality is maintained. Development of Green Hotels: Eco-friendly or green hotels are developed under the construct of sustainable operation of the touristry industry. It shall be based on the capacity to prolong the ecological environment, and shall be in line with local economic development and local moralss. In add-on, it can run into the demands of modern-day people, but without jeopardizing the future coevalss. Furthermore, it shall be able to advance the local economic system, resource preservation, and protect the ecofriendly environment, therefore making a harmonious relationship with the nature. As the hotel adjustment is closely tied to the development of the touristry industry, when the diversion and leisure tendency is going progressively popular, increased demand for touristry will besides excite the demand for hotel adjustment. Harmonizing to the traditional feeling, hotels are topographic points that offer luxury adjustment and services. But, under the planetary environmental consciousness an d environmental protagonism, and following with the environmental direction demands, hotel services are now focused on cleaner production, eco-friendly services, and regular resource preservation. The construct of eco-friendly hotels came into being under the green corporate civilization and the above rules. With increasing attending on the environmental issues, and influenced by the construct of green hotels, hotels in every state are urged to implement the environmental direction and energy economy steps. The chief liquors of green hotels are to supply low-cost merchandises and services to run into the demands of the populace, to better the quality of life at the same clip, to cut down the ecological impact on the environment bit by bit throughout the life rhythm, and to cut down the ingestion of natural resource. At least, the gait of energy ingestion shall be reconciled with the Earth s loading capacity. Eco-friendly Hotels Association ( 2010 ) steadfastly supported the green enterprises through encouragement and publicity of the green hotel services. Through appropriate direction of the natural resources, the green hotel construct can be applied to the hotel adjustment industry. The Green Practices in Hotels include: Committedness to Environmental Practices: ( By explicating Environmental Committees, Developing Strategies, Plan of Action, Manuals, explicating green squads, supervising environmental public presentation, pass oning visibleness of environmental patterns to invitees, interest holders, staff, sellers A ; public ) Energy Efficiency A ; Conservation: ( Installing tenancy detectors, usage of energy efficiency equipments, applications of surrogate energy beginnings, proper HVAC care, energy efficient designs, edifices A ; building forms ) Lighting: ( Installing programmable detectors, usage of reminder cards, commissariats for natural visible radiations, application of dimmer controls, usage of CFL and other such energy efficient lamps ) Landscape: ( Sprinkler irrigation systems, recycled H2O, trickle irrigation methods, usage of drouth resistant workss, grouping of tolerant workss, use of organic fertilisers ) Pull offing Hazardous A ; Toxic Substances: ( Proper commissariats and instructions for storing, usage of least toxic merchandises, small or no phosphates laundry merchandises, usage of rhenium indictable batteries ) Pest Management: ( Implementation of green integrated pest direction programme, application of organic insect powders, use of traps A ; barriers and discretion of strong and harmful chemicals ) Buying: ( Making environmental buying policy, advancing usage of recycled merchandises, promoting purchase of energy efficient equipments, penchant to environmentally responsible providers, appreciating organic and local but choice merchandises ) Recycling A ; Reuse: ( set uping good defined recycling policy, optimal usage of glass, plastic, aluminum, tins, paper, card boards and equal recycling, promoting usage of electronic files ) Transportation system: ( promoting usage of by rhythms, promoting pooling, auto sharing, walking, offering hotel bird in nearby countries, discriminatory parking to alternative manners of conveyances such as bio Diesel, electric, intercrossed vehicles ) Water Efficiency A ; Conservation: ( Re topographic point urinals with limited or no flush eco urinals, put ining low floor shower caputs and faucet aerators, encouraging H2O preservation both by employees and invitees, implementing optional linen and towel rhenium usage programme, look intoing escapes, application of engineering for H2O preservation like detectors ) 7.5 Enhancing the Guest Experiences Responsibly 7.6 Green Enterprises: Guest Demands and Credences 7.7 Lashkar-e-taibas Sum Up: The sustainability shall be the on-going issue of argument and research in cordial reception A ; touristry industry. Womens Studies Sex in Society essays

Womens Studies Sex in Society essays Sex plays a major role in today's society. From television advertisements and violence within society, all forms of media use sex to help sell their products. With the public being exposed to so many different types, the overuse and exploitation of sex is common. Is sex a useful tool, or a ploy to get the attention of the public? In some instances, it even encourages violence. The world we live in today is still man-made, no less now then in the nineteenth century. As Englishmen began to develop an identity in 19th century society, they mirrored the "ideals" for women of the Victorian period: gentility, weakness, ignorance and submissiveness. Opposing Viewpoints as the relationship of a man or woman to Society on the basis of gender became essential in shaping male and female attitudes towards one another. Over the past twenty years remarkable changes in these traditional male and female roles have been witnessed. The subsequent impact on men, women, and families due to these changes is believed to be, by many social historians, caused by the re-emergence of the women's movement. Recent research has established beyond a doubt that males and females are born with a different set of "instructions" built into their genetic code. Studies at Harvard University and elsewhere show that marked differences between male and female baby behavior are already obvious in the first months of life. Females are more oriented towards people. Male infants, on the other hand, are more interested in "things." Stanford psychologists conclude that women are "communicative" animals while men are "manipulative" animals. Some people believe this is hereditary, while others think that if boys and girls were brought up in exactly the same way then all behavioral differences between men and women would evaporate. Beginning in early adolescence, children develop their own ideas of male and femal ...

Romantic Love is a Poor Basis for Marriage Essay

Romantic Love is a Poor Basis for Marriage - Essay Example One day, a love-struck couple marry with all the complements for each other then the next day they are cursing one another in front of a judge. With the growing effects of media and the rampant news of the activities of celebrities which tend to become the models for younger generations nowadays, â€Å"love† is much celebrated and exalted in choosing a partner and deciding on marriage. However, it is interesting to note that â€Å"love† is now understood more on the feelings a person feels towards another rather than its basic ingredients which are patience, kindness, humility, loyalty and others. Men and women alike, now think they are more intelligent, more informed and allow themselves to find out if they have the â€Å"chemistry† to make a marriage work. They test this by staying together under one roof without getting married and if their sexual desires are satisfactorily met, then they decide to marry each other. However, in the long run, they find out that they made a mistake and therefore end up in a divorce. One of the studies on this topic was that of Tennov’s â€Å"limerence† which is the state of â€Å"being in love†, seeing all the good things in a person and disregarding the bad, just simply feeling good about everything that is happening in the relationship. The sad thing about this state is that, it only lasts for around two years (Owens). With the aforementioned study, it could be said that making romantic love the foundation of a relationship is foolish, not unless one plans to change partners every two years. More and more studies are being held these days about love and marriage, with the desire to dig into what makes marriages work. when one looks around, only a handful seem to have all that it takes for a marriage to be happy and lasting at the same time while so many seem to be lost without a manual. Scholars around the world search the differences of marriages, ones that work out and those that d o not. In this extended search, there have been so many conclusions made, suggestions given to couples, seminars held and probably more will be done to inform people and make their relationships work. One thing is for sure, romantic love is not enough to be the basis for marriage. There is a saying that says, â€Å"Love goes out of the window, together with the plates and spoons when there is no food on the table†. In some cases, this is literally true. Couples who joined themselves together in marriage can simply lose their temper when they are clawed by poverty and other troubles. This has been one of the guiding principles of most ancient an more recent eastern marriages. According to the studies of Lawrence Stone regarding English families until the eighteenth century, marriages were made on the basis of need for financial stability and lineage (Macfarlane). Despite this circumstance, many marriages worked well if the basis for such comment would be the lesser divorce rat es as compared to modern statistics. People then lived according to the norms and cultures of their age and space so that they were able to suppress their want to choose the person they would like to marry on the basis of romantic love. Taking into consideration the study on â€Å"

System Identification and Security Categorization Essay

System Identification and Security Categorization - Essay Example The principles of the CIA triad; integrity, availability and confidentiality are highly prioritized in the information system. Necessary control mechanism has been incorporated into the information security system in order to provide protection. These controls have been categorized to technical, management and operational controls. VA’s contain critical information and therefore effective organization, an accomplishment and supervision controls should be conducted with care. The main obligation of the e VAs is to accomplish the highest level of security while meeting the critical needs of an organization. The VA has been typically viewed by the majority as a mechanism for protecting information and information systems. This is not the case since its major concern is to protect the availability, confidentiality and integrity of the information and the information system. The control principles form the pillars of the CIA triad. Actions regarding risk management can be executed when planning, assessment of the significance of the risk and identification are carried out in a proper way. Though risk management will not absolutely eliminate risk, it possibly reduces the risk actualization, provides significant remedy and penitential risks in the future. The main goal of the VA is to protect information and information system through risk management program to achieve strategic and operational goals. The strategy adopted by the Information Security Management Act is based on risk approach. This is sated in the VA (2007), â€Å"the operating unit is responsible for conducting an accurate and thorough risk assessment to identify potential risk, vulnerabilities and threats to the confidentiality, integrity and availability of sensitive information held by VA.† The possibility of incurring a threat is potentially construed by the management  controls.

Learning Team Objective Essay Example for Free

Learning Team Objective Essay During weeks four and five, we learned all about methods a company can have a picture of their overall fiscal rankings. A few of the subjects dealt with include using a report of cash flows to observe the coming in and going out of cash, assessing fiscal reports, the way to report the issuance of the various kinds of stock and dividend payments, and the Sarbanes-Oxley Act influence. A report of cash flows indicates the receipt and payment of cash for the organization. The direct method is desired by the FASB, even though both ways are acceptable, and shows cash receipts and payments in operations whereas the indirect method changes net income which does not influence cash. To get commenced with a report of cash flows, the organization must change its net income from an accrual basis to a cash basis. Ultimately, an organization may decide their free cash flow to find out the amount of money is remaining after adjustments for capital expenses and dividends have been completed. The 3 methods of assessment are the horizontal, vertical, and ratio analysis. Horizontal assesses the fiscal report data during a period of time. This decides the increase or reduction which has occurred. Vertical analysis reports every item like a percent of base sum. This decides what amount of the total assets are existing assets or what amount of the net sales are selling expenditures. Ratio analysis reports the connection amongst the chosen items of the reports. This decides liquidity of assets, profits of the organization, and the solvency ratio informs if the organization is likely to survive over a long interval of time. Investors are able to use the cash flow report to find out if the organization has adequate cash to increase operations and pay dividends. The organization may use the information in the cash flow report to assess the effectiveness of operations. Cash flow from funding activities shows any modifications in debt, loans, or dividends. Issuing stock or rising long-term borrowing is actually a cash inflow. Paying dividends or decreasing liability is a cash outflow. Moreover, cash flow from operating activities calculates the modifications in cash flows from operations needing a calculation of the modifications in account balances in the balance sheet between accounting intervals. Scenarios may happen which result in unethical accounting routines because of lacking in the financial controls set down and followed by higher administration people. All six of these methods not just require to be set up but they must be adopted and enforced as well by way of assessment and follow-up. In case even one of the controls isnt set up in that case the opportunity may become open for unethical conduct. For instance, in case you dont specify duty by just having one individual accountable in that case it results in a lack of accountability if something is incorrect. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act was put into operation in 2002 as a result of great number of unethical and fraudulent scenarios abounding in companies. This Act says that all publicly operated organizations should have noted internal fiscal controls in the organization. Organizations must submit an assessment of the effectiveness and value of their internal controls with their conclusion of year fiscal package. Regular outside audits are carried out to make sure compliance by the companies with this Act. In case violations are found anytime, penalties and fines might be enacted upon higher administration level people to include imprisonment. To conclude, over weeks 4 and 5 we have learned all about the ways of creating cash flow reports, the way to apply the 3 different ratios when deciding how nicely or lousy the organization is performing fiscally, the way to report journal entries of the issuance of stock and common stock and the way to announce and enter payments from dividends, and lastly the way to stay ethical in accounting and be in conformity with SOX.

Individuality in Whitmans Song of Myself Essay -- Song of Myself Essa

Individuality in Whitman's Song of Myself During a lecture in 1907, William James said "the philosophy which is so important in each of us is not a technical matter; it is our more or less dumb sense of what life honestly means. It is only partly got from books; it is our individual way of just seeing and feeling the total push and pressure of the cosmos" (Bartlett 546) Individuality has been a prevalent theme in every type of literature for quite some time. Whether it is a character discovering his/her individuality or the author expressing his, literature is full of distinctness. The term individuality changes meaning with each person it meets. That is what makes the dynamic word so great. Throughout particular works read this semester, individuality has been the foundation for several of them. Walt Whitman takes his newfound ideas and Quaker background and introduces American Literature to a totally different meaning of individuality in "Song of Myself." Whitman's radical ideas of individualism have a great deal to do with his Quaker background. The Quaker religion is one in which the authority was Inner Light. "Whitman himself was not only personally familiar with, but deeply impressed by, a religion whose only authority was the Inner Light" (Canoy 481). The Inner Light is a special influence, which made Whitman's poetry unique. This certain influence did such things as guide Whitman down his soul searching path as well as help him define within himself the characteristics of an individual. In section fifteen of "Song of Myself," Whitman discusses people from every class and every profession. He goes on to say "the young fellow drives the express-wagon... love him though I do not know him;" (2753). ... ...either hasten their own delivery, not resist it" (2767). Would it really be that bad to be an individualist instead of conforming to the crowd? I do not think so. Works Cited *Bartlett, John. Bartlett's Familiar Quotations. Overpopulation Is Caused by Poverty Essay

Bangladesh is one of the poor countries with one of the highest population of the world. Is the country poor because of the huge number of people or the poverty itself is the reason behind the overpopulation? To answer this question, I have looked at the overall development condition and population of the world and tried to find the missing links between the two. First I presented some facts about world population and demography. Then I analyzed the Malthusian and Marxist views on population. I talked about the existing views that considered population growth as the main reason behind poverty. Then I discussed my arguments about those view and discussed how population growth is not the primary cause of low standard of living, gross inequalities or limited freedom choice that characterize much of the developing world. I tried to find the main reasons behind the impoverishment of the poor countries and how those lead to overpopulation. Background: Human race came into existence around 2 billion years ago. Agricultural Revolution took place about 10,000 years ago when people used to hunt and gather food. At that time the estimated world population was about 4 million. The population started to grow significantly after the agricultural revolution. However, the most dramatic population growth occurred after the Industrial Revolution in 1750s. The world population was approaching one billion people and was increasing by more than two million every year. This dramatic population growth is termed population explosion because within less than 300 years the number of people mushroomed to more than 6 billion whereas before this, world population grew very slowly for millions of years. At this very moment, nearly 7 billion people are sharing this planet. By 2050, the population is expected to reach 9 billion. The world population is very unevenly distributed by geographic region, fertility and mortality levels and age structure. Here we also have to consider the term demographic transition: transition from high birth and death rates to low birth and death rates. Most of the developing countries are in stage two and the developed countries in stage three. So in the developing countries, though death rate has dropped significantly due to improvement in medicine and health care, fertility rate remains high. So population growth is highest in the developing and poor countries. Existing literature: Now the question is why birth rates are so high in the developing countries? In 1798, Thomas Malthus proposed a theory that determines the relationship between population growth and economic development. According to him, the poor countries are poor because of the population growth. Eliminate the population problem and the problem of poverty will be solved by itself. To eliminate the extra people, positive and preventive checks are necessary. Positive checks are famine, natural disasters, war etc which according to him is a good way to get rid of the unnecessary people who are burden to the society. Preventive checks would be only moral restrain because birth controls were considered as sins according to the Catholic Church. Malthus was not aware of the technological progress that would occur and thus he came up with the theory that food production will not be able to keep up with the population growth. Thus the solution was to get rid of the poor people. Karl Marx saw the Malthusian point of view as an outrage against humanity. Marx pinpointed the fact that with technological progress, there would be more production. So capital would be increasing too. However, the few capitalist who own all the resources exploit the poor workers and keep them poor. So poverty is the result of a poorly organized capitalist society where there is no equal distribution of wealth. From the Marxist point of view, overpopulation is not the reason behind slow economic growth and development. Though the theory of Malthus is much criticized and controversial, his ideas are still remaining in the present world. Many theorists and economists see the reduction of population growth through severe measures as the easiest way of ensuring economic prosperity in a developing country. According to them, unrestrained population increase is the main reason behind low standard of living, malnutrition, ill health, environmental degradation, and many other economic and so cial problems. There is a theory known as ‘population-poverty cycle’. This theory states that overpopulation makes the economic, social, and psychological problems more complicated. As more children are born every day, there is less savings rate per person in the household and national level. Because of the uncontrolled population growth, the government fails to provide the basic necessities for the additional people. This leads to low living standard of the existing generation and eventually poverty is transferred to the next generation. At present China is the most populous country in the world with a number of 1.34 billion. This country has undertaken one of the most harsh and coercive population control policies in the early 1980s- one child per family policy. Though this policy dramatically reduced the growth rate, is caused many socio-economic problems and controversies. However, the decline in the fertility rate in China through one child policy is less successful than approaches based on women empowerment and education in some parts of India, such as the state of Kerala. This shows us that population no longer remains a problem even though there is slow economic growth by focusing on empowering people, especially women. Defending my thesis: My thesis is that poverty causes overpopulation and to solve both the problems, other issues are needed to be taken care of. One of the main causes that keep poor countries and poor people poor is unequal distribution of wealth and natural resources. The developed countries consist of one quarter of the world’s population but consume almost 80% of the world resources. In 2005, the wealthiest 20% of the world accounted for 76.6% of total private consumption. The poorest 20% consumed just 1.5%. When one child is born in a developed country, the amount of money and resources spend behind it is equivalent to 16 children in the developing countries. Therefore the developed countries should cut back their very high consumption instead of asking developing countries to control their population growth. However they do not do that in an attempt to hold down the development of the poor countries to continue dominance over them and to maintain the very expensive living style. So they mad e population growth the main reason behind poverty to distract everyone from the real reasons. They pressurize the poor nations to adopt aggressive population control programs even though they themselves went through a period of sizable population increase that accelerated their own development processes. So as the LDCs are kept poor, no or less development occurs and thus generates overpopulation. Also a huge amount of resources are hold idle. For example, only 12% of all the potential arable land is under cultivation. So the land actually being cultivated amounts only a fraction of its potential. According to one web resource- ‘Enough arable land exists in India to give each person in the country approximately half an acre. In famine-ravaged Ethiopia, each person could have three-quarters of an acre of arable land. Africa, the poorest continent, has 20.2% of the world’s land area, and only 13% of its population. North America has a whopping 2.1 acres of arable land per person!’ So many areas with potential resources are under populated and many small areas (urban areas in the LDCs) are concentrated with too many people. This unequal distribution of people in terms of land causes poverty rather than the population growth. Underdevelopment itself is a huge problem. If the governments of the developing countries adopt correct strategies that promote higher levels of living, greater self-esteem and expanded freedom, population will take care of itself. If people are healthy and better educated, they will themselves be aware of the fact that smaller families are better than larger families. On the other case, if they are uneducated and physically and psychologically weak, the large family will be the only real source of social security. So the birth control programs and severe child control policies will be unsuccessful if there is no motivation to empower and enlighten the people, especially the women. If the women have equal roles and status like the men and have access to birth control, fertility rate will fall by itself. However, the richest people of the developing countries consume most of the resources and deprive the rest of the people of their daily necessities. As the poor people are kept poor they fail to get educated and empowered which leads to low quality of life and overpopulation. Conclusion: Overpopulation is not the main cause behind poverty. It is the other way around. However, fast population growth is not desirable too. So in order to develop, countries like Bangladesh need to adopt policies that focus on making people aware of the ways to keep the family small. The consequences of rapid population should neither be exaggerated nor minimized. However, it is pretty clear problem of population is not simply a problem of huge number. It is about quality of life and material well being. So if there is not equal distribution of wealth, idle resources, and subordination of women, poor countries and poor people would remain poor and this will lead to the problem of overpopulation. Nonviolent video game Essay

The future of entertainment resolves around technology. Video games become more and more realistic. Moreover, the main consumers for violent video games are teens, which the games encourage killing and fighting enemies. However, some of us who play this video game may ask the same question in their mind including myself: â€Å"Do violent video games influence youth to act aggressively and violence? † Overplaying video games can have many disastrous effects on teen, but limiting game-play can reduce the chance to get the effects. Scientist has believed that violent video games are more harmful than violent TV Programs and Films. There are three reasons that show video games are more harmful than TV Programs and Films. First, video game play is active whereas watching TV is passive. People learn better when they are actively involved. Best example to describe is participating during class time, which mean that you ask and answer question in the class. Second, players of violent video games are more likely to identify with a violent character. If the game is a first person shooter, players have the same visual perspective as the killer. If the game is third person, the player controls the actions of the violent character from a more distant visual perspective. However in a violent TV program, viewers might or might not identify with a violent character, which prevent them to do something that should not happened in the real life. Third, violent games directly reward violent behavior, such as by awarding points or by allowing players to advance to the next game level. In some games, players are rewarded through verbal praise, such as hearing the words â€Å"Nice shot! † after killing an enemy. It is well known that rewarding behavior increases the tendency of the player to be addicted to the game. While in TV programs reward is not directly tied to the viewer’s behavior and it will just produce some pissed of feeling to the person who they don’t like. Although the scientific evidence clearly shows that violent video games have harmful effects, many people still deny these effects, especially violent game players. However, some people claim that violent video games are good for us and some players believe that violent video games are cathartic, it mean that they allow players to release pent up anger or release stress easily. Moreover they need this game because to release their stress or not they will not commit suicide. Nevertheless, it’s depended on the user of the video games, whether video games will promote aggression and violence or not. In my opinion, playing violent games it’s ok, but don’t be to addict to the game or overplay. Once you get addicted and play everyday, you may become on of them: Eric Harris or Dylan Klebold who work together to killed their entire classmates in the school, because to much playing violent video games. It happened in Jefferson Country, Colorado (20 April, 1999) and it is the worse school shooting in U. S. A. So now it depend on you how efficient you use video games.

Metropolitan Museum of Art essays

Metropolitan Museum of Art essays For my cultural event I chose to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I've always, even while I lived in Portland, had a wish to visit it and to experience the feeling that was so popular among those who have been there before. I often imagined what it would be like, but when on Saturday the 14th of October I actually went there for the first time I was speechless. It was a lot more then what I pictured it to be. I spent 4 hours there and in that time I was only able to see the first floor and briefly run through the second floor. As I walked in and turned left, I found myself among the most beautiful sculptures by artists not only of American heritage but also from around the world. I saw the sculpture of Adam by Tullio Lombardo, Alheus and Arethusa by Battista Lorenzi, Andromeda and the Monster by Domenico Gaidi, Ugolino and his Sons, my most favorite of them all due to the reality of the expressions on the faces of the sculpture and the amazing detailed work that Jean Baptise Carpealle has done. Those were just a few of all that I saw, the ones that got stuck in my memory because they were so amazing. From that gallery, I went into another, a gallery that holds rooms from the 19th and 18th centuries, with all their ancient furniture. Rooms filled with a completely different atmosphere then my own or the one that I am used to. Gorgeous chairs, rugs, paintings invited me to touch them, to feel their culture, to hear the noises that they would make, but of course forbidden to be touched or to even come close to them. After that I went through gorgeous galleries of African Art, which took me into a completely different world of their own culture. I walked by masks, dishes, chairs, and millions of textures and colors of wood, which they were made out of. And then I was led into another room, a gallery of ancient Greek works. This was probably the most interesting room to me because I've always found the Gre...

The Iliad Book One by Homer - Summary

The Iliad Book One by Homer - Summary | Summary of Iliad Book I | Main Characters | Notes | Iliad Study Guide Song of the Wrath of Achilles In the very first line of the Iliad, the poet addresses the Muse, who inspires him with song, and asks her to sing (through him) the story of the wrath of the son of Peleus, aka Achilles. Achilles is angry with King Agamemnon for reasons shortly to be divulged, but first, the poet lays blame at the feet of Achilles for the death of many of the Achaean warriors. (Homer refers to the Greeks as Achaeans or Argives or Danaans, but we call them Greeks, so Ill use the term Greek throughout.) The poet then also blames the son of Zeus and Leto, aka Apollo, who has sent a plague to kill the Greeks. (The parallel blame of gods and mortals is common throughout the Iliad.) Apollo the Mouse God Before returning to the wrath of Achilles, the poet elaborates Apollos motives for killing Greeks. Agamemnon holds the daughter of Apollos priest Chryses (Chryseis). Chryses is willing to forgive and even bless Agamemnons ventures, if Agamemnon will return Chryses daughter, but instead, the haughty King Agamemnon sends Chryses packing. Calchas Prophecy To repay the indignity Chryses has suffered, Apollo, the mouse god, rains arrows of plague on the Greek forces for 9 days. (Rodents do spread plague, so the association between a divine mouse function and delivering plague makes sense, even if the Greeks werent completely aware of the connection.) The Greeks dont know why Apollo is angry, so Achilles persuades them to consult the seer Calchas, which they do. Calchas reveals Agamemnons responsibility. He adds that the plague will only lift if the dishonor is amended: Chryses daughter must be freely restored to her father, and appropriate offerings made to Apollo. Trade of Briseis Agamemnon is not pleased with the prophecy, but realizes he must comply, so he agrees, conditionally: Achilles must hand over to Agamemnon Briseis. Achilles had received Briseis as a war prize from the sack of Thebe, a city in Cilicia, where Achilles had killed Eetion, father of the Trojan prince Hectors wife, Andromache. Since then, Achilles had grown very attached to her. Achilles Stops Fighting for the Greeks Achilles agrees to hand over Briseis because Athena (one of the 3 goddesses, together with Aphrodite and Hera, who was involved in the judgment of Paris, a war goddess, and the sister of the war god Ares), tells him to. However, at the same time he surrenders Briseis, Achilles sulkily quits the Greek forces. Thetis Petitions Zeus on Behalf of Her Son Achilles complains to his nymph mother Thetis, who, in turn, brings the complaint to Zeus, the king of the gods. Thetis says that since Agamemnon has dishonored her son, Zeus should honor Achilles. Zeus agrees, but faces the wrath of his wife, Hera, queen of the gods, for his involvement in the conflict. When Zeus angrily dismisses Hera, the queen of the gods turns to her son Hephaestus, who comforts her. However, Hephaestus wont help Hera because he still vividly recalls the anger of Zeus when he pushed him off Mt. Olympus. (Hephaestus is depicted as lame as a result of the fall, although this is not specified here.) Many of them are very basic and may be obvious. I hope they will be useful for people who are reading the Iliad as their first introduction to ancient Greek literature. O goddessThe ancient poets gave the gods and goddesses credit for many things, including the inspiration to write. When Homer calls on the goddess, he is asking the goddess known as Muse to help him write. The number of muses varied and they became specialized. to HadesHades is the god of the Underworld and a son of Cronus, making him the brother of Zeus, Poseidon, Demeter, Hera, and Hestia. The Greeks had a vision of an afterlife that includes having a king and queen (Hades and Persephone, daughter of Demeter) on thrones, various realms to which people were sent depending on how good they were in life, a river that had to be crossed via a ferry and a three-headed (or more) watchdog named Cerberus. The living feared that when they died they might be left standing on the other side of the river waiting to cross because the body was unburied or there was no coin for the ferryman. many a hero did it yield a prey to dogs and vulturesWe tend to think that once youre dead, youre dead, and what happens to your body makes no difference, but to the Greeks, it was important for the body to be in good shape. It would then be put on a funeral pyre and burned, so it would seem it makes no difference what it was like, but the Greeks also made sacrifices to the gods by means of burning animals. These animals had to be the best and unblemished. In other words, just because the body would be burned did not mean the body could be in less than pristine shape.Later in the Iliad, this almost obsessive need for a body in good shape causes the Greeks and Trojans to fight over Patroclus, whose head the Trojans wish to remove and put on a spike, and over the corpse of Hector, which Achilles does everything he can to abuse, but without success, because the gods watch over it. so as to take away the plague from us.Apollo shot silver arrows that could kill humans with the plague. Although there may be some debate over the etymology, Apollo appears to have been known as a Mouse god, probably because of a recognition of the connection between rodents and disease. augursthrough the prophesyings with which Phoebus Apollo had inspired himAugurs could predict the future and tell the will of the gods. Apollo was particularly associated with prophesy and is considered the god who inspires the oracle at Delphi. A plain man cannot stand against the anger of a king, who if he swallow his displeasure now, will yet nurse revenge till he has wreaked it. Consider, therefore, whether or no you will protect me.Achilles is here asked to protect the prophet against the will of Agamemnon. Since Agamemnon is the most powerful king, Achilles must be pretty strong to be able to offer his protection. In Book 24, when Priam visits him, Achilles tells him to sleep on the porch so that any possible emissary from Agamemnon will not see him because, in this case, Achilles would not be strong enough or willing to protect him. I have set my heart on keeping her in my own house, for I love her better even than my own wife Clytemnestra, whose peer she is alike in form and feature, in understanding and accomplishments.Agamemnon says he loves Chrseis better than his own wife Clytemnestra. It is not really saying a lot. After the fall of Troy, when Agamemnon goes home, he takes along a concubine whom he publicly displays to Clytemnestra, antagonizing her even more than he already has by sacrificing their daughter to Artemis to ensure a successful sailing for his fleet. He seems to love her as property, as Achilles recognizes.... And Achilles answered, Most noble son of Atreus, covetous beyond all mankindAchilles comments on how greedy the king is. Achilles is not as powerful as Agamemnon, and ultimately, cant stand against him; however, he can be and is very annoying. Then Agamemnon said, Achilles, valiant though you be, you shall not thus outwit me. You shall not overreach and you shall not persuade me.Agamemnon rightly accuses Achilles of over-reaching and by taunting the king, provokes him to insist on taking Achilles prize. What though you be brave? Was it not heaven that made you so?Achilles is renowned for his bravery, but Agamemnon says it is no big deal, since it is a gift of the gods. There are many biases/alien attitudes in the Iliad. The pro-Trojan gods are weaker than the pro-Greek. Heroism comes only to those noble birth. Agamemnon is superior because he is more powerful. Same with Zeus, vis a vis Poseidon and Hades. Achilles is too proud to settle for an ordinary life. Zeus has much contempt for his wife. Death can confer honor, but so can trophies of battle. A woman is worth a few oxen, but is worth less than certain other animals. Return to Books of the Iliad
